This project offers an intimate exploration of the unique rock landscapes within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, capturing a vulnerable landscape at a critical crossroads. ​Recently threatened by sweeping reductions to its protected borders, this irreplaceable ecosystem faces the imminent encroachment of commercial resource extraction.

By utilizing an aerial perspective and intentionally omitting the horizon, I transform the vast rock landscapes of this area into intimate abstractions. This vantage point strips away the familiar context of "scenery," focusing the viewer’s eye instead on the raw, artistic details of the geology. The earth is presented as a fragile piece of art, inviting viewers to move beyond passive observation and connect deeply with its ancient beauty.

This body of work illustrates the invaluable nature of public lands, with the monument serving as its primary canvas. The aim is to cultivate a quiet awe, drawing the viewer into a personal relationship with these geologic wonders. Ultimately, this project stands as an urgent call to safeguard our shared heritage from the cascading ecological damage of industrial development.
