Kelley has a deep and profound interest in exposed geology. She is particularly drawn to

capturing landscapes where nature has created the most difficult conditions for survival and

landscapes that are significantly influenced by weathering and erosion processes, including the

actions of water, wind, and ice.

 

Living in Colorado affords Kelley with great exposure to rugged mountain landscapes with

exposed rock surfaces and craggy peaks. She also finds herself spending considerable time in

the neighboring states of Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, drawn to their diverse array of deserts,

badlands, canyons and rock cliff landscapes.

 

Most recently she has discovered another, more subtle exposed geologic feature - salt playas.

While one naturally thinks of Utah as a place to find these, salt playas can also be found all over

the Southwest.  She is drawn to their abstract beauty and ever changing nature.

 

While Kelley’s early interests in photographic expression focused on documentary storytelling,

she now focuses on telling another story - the ancient story of Earth, capturing how geological

processes have sculpted the planet over millennia. And, she has found that through the unique

from the unique perspective of a drone, she is able to tell that story more deeply and completely.

 

Kelley’s early artistic pursuits focused more on individual works of photography, where she has

received multiple awards and recognition. She is now transitioning to a project based approach

with her photography, with reduced focus on individual images and more focus on complete

bodies of work.
